Friday Nite

Went to Momenta Auction Preview. Saw Eric Heist. Walked thru 'burg, saw Guy Richard Smith, his wife, Larry Walzak and a co-curator of the Artwalk Wmsburg thing. Bought a b'day gift for my roommate's 5 year old.

Sean Bell Verdict

Disgusting. Knew it would be a whitewash. Sure these guys weren't model citizens but are undercover cops allowed to shoot ANYONE and make up a story after the fact?

Beyond Vietnam

Affirmation Action, Baby (baby), "Martha" Luther King

I was six years old when he was shot. I was a "pickaninny" living with my grandparents in rural northern Fla. I was 4 years from going to Dalton school, and being called a "filthy, river nigger" by Robert Redford's son Jaime. People in main stream media rarely focus on the connection between his Vietnam dissent and his assassination but he was killed a year after he publically came out against it.

The Great Johnny Burke

Better face the facts, ol buddy,
And be prepared to take the blow.
You dont have to sit and study,
Its something anyone should know.
Shake hands... get your hat...
And go.

You can praise her eyes,
And adore her hair.
But if love aint there,
It aint there.

And you can walk her home
In the warm spring air,
But if love aint there,
It aint there.

And you can look
With a longing in your look,
And try every method in the book
And worship the smile that kind of
Took you unaware.

And you can weep and sigh,
You can say, unfair.
You can almost die of despair.
But if love aint there,
It aint there.

talking heads

Alexis Rockman, Brenda Zlamany, Damian Loeb

I saw Alexis' "Antarctica Show". He is a peculiar phenomenon in the scene. Most people sit in their Brooklyn or LES studio and imagine an image, Alexis is the "gentleman painter", not only does he have a story to tell about the journey in realizing the image but he has a story to tell about the ACTUAL excursion that inspired it. The large centrepiece is a delight for it's execution and beauty. It has a lot of little delightful surprises.

Brenda had a couple pieces in Frost and Reeds booth at Bridge. A beautiful portrait of Ike Ude and Lyle Ashton Harris plus a small Vietnam trip inspired landscape. Again masterful execution in a contemporary milieu of comic book art and cheeky irony.

Haven't seen much of Damien Loeb these days but thought I would give him a reference with these two.
